Halloween heroism when locked out of kitchen

Organisers of the Halloween party at St John's community Centre on the Isle of Dogs invited Councillor Stephanie Eaton to see the conditions under which volunteers and others were working. Cllr Eaton expressed her concern at the conditions of the cooking and washing up facilities, and her dismay that the workers were locked out of the kitchen.

As is seen in these pictures, the Halloween party was enjoyed by all. The entertainment was provided by The Fabulous Emilio (and his little grandson) and there was singing and dancing to complement the food.

Councillor Eaton said: "Linkage Plus at Neighbours in Poplar" are doing a great job in running the programme and providing company, music, a hot meal and some gentle exercise for the older residents in the area. It's just such a shame that the facilities are so poor: washing up using bowls of cold water from a less than hygienic supply, and a two ring cooker on the floor. It is a miracle they achieve so much with so little.I'm told there is a kitchen that could be used but the access is through an office which is also empty"

Councillor Eaton has written to the owners of the community centre, Toynbee Island Homes to ask if the organisers can have access to the kitchen in the building.
