On a beautiful Spring day the residents of the Crown Estates across London gathered to protest outside the offices of the Crown Estate and to petition her majesty The Queen. Residents of the Victoria Park Estate in Bethnal Green were joined on the march by Councillor Stephanie Eaton.
After the petition had been handed in at the gates of Buckingham Palace, Councillor Eaton commented; "This has been a day of real passion, with residents leaving the Crown Estate in no doubt as to the strength of their opposition to the threat of the sale of freehold. The Crown Estate tenants are rightly concerned about what will happen to their homes, and have received only very limited and vague assurances".
Liberal Democrat campaigner Richard Macmillan who has been undertaking research on the Crown Estate Act of 1961 said "This consultation has been a sham as the Crown Estate has been marketing the properties before the consultation period is over. We think this is a disgrace, and are calling for a full ballot of the residents prior to any decision. We have also written to the relevant government minister asking her to exercise the power of direction to prevent this sale".
Liberal Democrats in Bethnal Green North will continue to monitor the situation and we hope the Crown Estate will listen to the residents and retain the freehold of the properties.
